Paramore- Decode Analysis

Paramore-Decode
Decode was the official music video for the film Twilight, as the song was used in the movie. The music video shows shots from the actual film, I am going to analyse Just the music video rather than the film clips. The video is both performance and narrative.
Setting the scene is a forest this is in correlation with the film; a bird’s eye view sets the scene. This then fades into extreme close up of a guitar on a rotating axes, this shows the first part of the performance. Zooms are reverse zooms are used to show all band members, mainly focusing on the main lead singer.
The lead singer is in the middle of the forest and the background is moving behind her. This represents the world moving around her but she is still showing use she is in her own world. A above shot also enforces the opinion of the lead singer being in her own world, because the Ariel shots allows us to see the background with nobody around.
Lots of dolly shots on spinning axes are used this reveals all angles of the characters and band members.

The setting up of the Rose Photo Shoot

I used a Nikon D200 SLR and I also used a tripod and remote.
The background was simply a black piece of material which was pinned to my wall.
To hold the rose in place I used oasis in a jug of water.
I had to make sure that the camera did not move at all, so the photos would not be different. To make sure that the camera did not move and go out of focus I used a remote to take the photos so that even the vibration of the camera did not move the placement.

Step by step to editing photographs of the rose

To follow the theme of our narrative we have decided to put the rose in black and white except the rose head this fitted with the ‘arty’ look that was constant through our video.

For the photos of the rose to look professional, I have decided to edit each photo one by one using Photoshop. This required a lot of patients and hard work.
First I uploaded photo 1 onto a new blank background. I then using the magic wand tool select the outside of the rose and used the erase colour tool, this on a short cut was: Ctrl Shift U. I did this to make it quicker than pressing on the colour settings. This erased the background colour which left me with an off black background.
To make the stork and leafs of the rose in black and white. I had to select the area using the magnetic lasso tool, making sure that I did not select the rose head as this was staying in colour. Then when selected I used the Ctrl Shirt U key to erase the colour this left the rose stork ad leafs grey. I then zoomed into the photograph using the + sign on the keyboard to find any areas that I did not select. I used the magic wand to correct the areas I missed.
This is the before and after of editing the photographs

Diary Entry

The first performance shoot was noticeably unprepared and I feel this showed in the play back of the footage, we decide to reshoot the whole band performance as we found it was not at the standard that the rest of our music video was at.
The reshoot of the Band took place at the lighthouse beach; this was a running theme through the video.
This is my diary entry for that day:
Filming for only two hours of performance shots required me to do a lot of preparation. We, as a group needed to arrange who was bring what and a time that was appropriate , we found that filming early in the morning worked well for all members of our groups due to other commitments on night times. So at 7 am we arranged to meet at the lighthouse in the area, seven was the earliest we could film this was because of the winter season and the late sunrise, the darkness would effect the filming as we were using natural lighting.
We started setting up prompt; we made sure that the lighthouse was visible in the background to create the correct mise-en-scene. By 7.45 we were set up with a full drum kit, guitar, amplifier and microphone. We used mini speakers to play the song so that we could hear the music and play along to the tempo.
After four full songs playbacks including static and mobile shots we each filmed one another to use as band close up to fit with codes and conventions of music videos.
To use our limited time efficiently we also look still images that would be used on our DVD cover.

The narrative in our music video was very important as part of our story line, we had to make sure that the story line was clear to the audience.
Four shoots in total we used as footage, as after editing that footage more ideas of what other things we could do came to mind, so we had to go back to the beach and add more footage. The first shoot was on Cullercoats beach in the caves, previous to shooting there we checked out the location to make sure that it was suitable and what we wanted.

Using a tripod and camcorder was all we needed as natural light was provided. Mise-en-scene was created using white dresses on both of the characters. The only prop used was a piece of parchment.
Shoot two: we decided to add more footage of the two main characters, so again we arranged to meet at the same location and same spot for continuity issues.

Rose Editing Step By Step Using Premier Elements

Rose step by step with Videos

For the first video I imported the clips into premier elements, clip by clip. I then exported the whole video as one. I opened a new project and imported the movie. To get the rose to open and die quickly I had to speed up the video from 6.00.00 minutes to 00.13.00 seconds. This made the rose look jerky and created the effect I wanted. This is shown below

I then explored the effects on Premier Elements; I found no effects that I could use to make the video look a authentic old film. I then looked further and found a effect on Windows Movie Maker. There were several different effects that I could chose from, including different styles from different Eras.
I found two different effects that I liked, these are shown below:

After lots of discussion with our group we decide to use effect 1 this is because it showed the detail of the rose, where as the older effect look away all the hard work we put in when editing each picture.
This is the final edit:

At the end of our music video we decide to do a rewind of all that happens in the video, we then rewound the rose footage to Finnish the music video off. I did this by selecting the time stretch key and reversed the speed, from forwards to backwards. This rewound the whole opening of the rose. So the rose died and came to life.

Powerpoint Presentation

This is our pitch
Powerpoint[1]
We have decided that we will all take part in our video, the characters that we are playing are as follows:

Christie Flynn – Singer-character 1
Brooke Hopkin - Drums
Sarah Vyse- Bass guitar/character 2
we have decide to not use any other people not in our group due to the availability of other students, we thought that this problem could cause problems, so we are going to be the characters

Animatic

I have composed an animatic this will be used as a guide line for when we shoot the actual music video, we will be able to look and see the events running order.

Rough Cut Paramore Conspiracy Music Video

This is a rough cut of our music video, we will be making many changes to this video in the final cut. For legal and copyright reasons we have deleted all audio. In the final video audio will be present for the Examiners copy.

All Members of my class evaulated my music video
Introduction
I have been rating other members of my class’s music video, I have been given a sheet with questions like what is good about this music video? What constructive criticism would you give to this music video? Out of five how would you rate this video? This allow me to day what is good and what is not so good.
I have found using the class assessment very useful, as I have underlined what needs to be changed in my music video. I already knew that many aspects of my video needed adjustments, the feedback from the class gave me other ideas and reinforced mine. I got feedback from other groups including teacher and this is what they thought.

I found that all of the groups said that black and white affect “creates a arty feel” I also thought that it was a good technique and it was very effective. However, I have came to realise, due to the analysis feedback, that in particular parts the contrast is to high and it makes the characters dresses blend into her skin as a group we will have to edit the brightness of the shot so that it is clearer to the audience.

They also commented on the contrast between narrative and performance was different because the performance was set in colour. To resolve this problem we may need to put the band in black and white or edit the brightness, contrast and shadowing.

The unclear story line was also noted as many students and teachers commented on not understanding the storyline, this will be edited meaning a reshoot of some parts, this will be done so the story line is made clearer to the audience.
Overall I found that the peer assessments was very useful as it got other opinions on our video, which has now lead me to change things that I did not think were necessarily bad. As a whole we got a 2/3 which is not bad for the first ruff cut, as a group we will be aiming for a 3 /4 for our final video.

Theory

I am going to study the theorist Andrew Goodwin and observe some of his theories, matching them with music video: Crazy in Love By Beyonce.

Andrew Goodwin noted that music videos demonstrate genre characteristics for example a R&B Singer would include Material items like a car or a expensive watch, a pop group would include a big dance performance.
He also found that there is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals and music and visuals Either amplifying or contradicting the music.
Thirdly he discovered The record company will demand close-ups of the artist so that the audience can familiarise with artist.
Goodwin then went on to discovered that in music videos there is many references to the notion of looking within screens, mirrors and telescopes and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
Finally Goodwin found that there is many intertextual reference to films, TV programmes, and other music videos.

Beyonce - Crazy In Love Theory Analysis
This music video demonstrates Goodwin’s theory of voyeuristic treatment of the female body well as the opening shot is of Beyonce walking along a street, the camera gets all angles of her body, including a long shot of her behind
The sexual dance moves towards the end of the song are made even more noticeable to the audience by a close up shot on that particular area of the body
Water is used to make Beyonce seem sexy standing under the rain dancing sexually. Her body is in black so you can only see the outline of her body this shows off her shape and curves.

Also his discovery of genre characteristics is clearly demonstrated as material items like cars are used. But also elements of pop characteristics are demonstrated as Beyonce is seen dancing in a group. This reinforces Goodwin’s theory.

Other aspects of Goodwin’s theory are correct intertextual reference to films, TV programmes, and other music videos are used in the lyrics of Crazy in Love
“The pocket is still fat like Tony Soprano” this is another theory that correlates to the music video.
“Crazy and deranged” are other lyrics within the song this shows a relationship between the lyrics and visuals and music and visuals, supporting Goodwin’s theory as Jay-Z puts his finger to his head and makes the sign of crazy. Other references are when the lyrics “Best Fur” is used Beyonce is wearing a fur coat.

From analysing Goodwin’s theories against my chosen music video, I have discovered that all of his theories are shown amongst the music video of my choice.
When making my own music video I must follow the theories that Goodwin has suggested to meet the codes and conventions of a music video.

Initial Ideas and Time Table

We will also all take it in turns for the filming of the video, using a variety of different camera techniques.
Time management will be important during the course of my A2 media project, as a group we have come up with this timetable which includes tasks which much be done individually as well as group tasks.. All work for the planning of our music video has been included in this timetable:

Music Video Analysis

The Eagles- How Long
This Music Video is in black and white, I think that this is because the eagles are aimed at the older generation as they got together in the late 70’s. Most of the video is performance based this is also due to the older generation, they would prefer to watch a performance of the band rather than a story. The opening of the video shows and set the scene, this looks like it is country based in America, as the Eagles are of the country rock genre. The sun rise represents the start of the video.
The story line is very simple in that the characters are walking across the desert, this related to the song title ‘how long’ will it take to reach civilisation. Many camera angles are used, most are zooms and close ups of the band members this shows their facial expressions and lip movement. Pans across the musicians are also used to show the performance. The performance takes place in an old empty warehouse this adds to the country rock theme. Other scenes are outside a caravan with an old fashioned stereo.

The Who – My Generation 1965
This music video follows the rock genre this is show band members smashing guitars, this fits with the era of the music video. The title of the song ‘my generation’ is portrayed by the smashing of the guitars; this is the only narrative of the video. Most of the video is performance based, this is also due to the older generation, they would prefer to watch a performance of the band rather than a story. The quick cuts and the lack of editing emphasises the old rock effect. This also shows how technology has changed since the 60’s. Also the black and white shows the age of the video.

Tatu- All the things she said 2003
This music video is mainly narrative based the video is about two girls whose sexuality have not been accepted in society. The fence is concept based; the fence isolates the girls from the rest of the world making them the minority. All different ages and ethnic groups are standing motionless, this symbolises that all family and friends are not happy with their choice.
The girls are wearing school uniforms in the video this makes them look young. This makes the audience think that the girls are inferior to the adults standing around the fence.
A pathetic fallacy is used within the video as the whether matches the adult’s feelings over the girl’s choice of sexuality. This shows the girls love for each other to be a negative rather than a positive.
Quick flashing cuts are used to show the frantic actions of the girls trying to break from the fence. Close ups of the girls faces show the passion between the two characters. It takes the focus of the judgmental world around them and only showing that the girl’s opinions are the ones that matter.
Towards the end of the video it starts to snow and the girls are sitting down warming each other. This shows that they have given up begging for approval.

Beyonce – Single Ladies
Information on the music video:
This music video has won awards all around the world including a VMA. The inspiration for the music video came from Gwen Verdon’s performance of “Mexican Breakfast” on The Ed Sullivan Show in June 1969. She’d seen it on YouTube and wanted to see if she could attempt it. Beyonce ‘single ladies’ is a full performance video it is an upbeat dance anthem that is the opposite to other song of Beyonce like "If I Were A Boy."
On "Single Ladies," Beyonce reminds all the women that if their man hasn't made a serious commitment to the relationship, then he can't get mad if she wants to do her own thing: "If you liked it, then you shoulda put a ring on it." This Video is different as Beyonce dances to match the lyrics e.g. pointing at her ring to signify “If you liked it, then you shoulda put a ring on it." This is different because other music videos that i have watched have both performance and narrative. This video however does not need narrative to show the story line.

The video shows Beyonce dancing with two women wearing leotards and High shoes. This represents the upbeat pop song.
Only 7 cuts are used in this video, this makes it seem as Beyonce is dancing continually without stopping. This shows her talent to fans. Only one location is used, this is a plain white room; this is so that it does not take any attention away from Beyonce’s talent of dancing. Different lighting is used so in the chorus is bright and upbeat while the verses are darker. Camera movement is also minimal so that all attention is on the artist. A fun 360 dolly shot. This is used to show a full video of the performance.
Towards the end of the video the music gains more tempo, quick cuts are used; this emphasizes the performance and the energy that is going into the performance.

Paramore-Decode
Decode was the official music video for the film Twilight, as the song was used in the movie. The music video shows shots from the actual film, I am going to analyse Just the music video rather than the film clips. The video is both performance and narrative.

The Unicorn Video

At the start of the music video stop start motion is used create an old chilling feel. Candles also add to this effect. It creates a chiaroscuro effect as they are the only source of lighting in the image. This scene is a great scary scene however the quick cut that is used does not fit with the theme and the lighting change is too drastic it lessens the old chilling feel. The cut is to a performance of the band playing, this is good as it fits with the chorus of the song. Over lapping of film is used during the performance this allows the audience to see the main artist and the rest of the band. I think that this effect is good in that it creates a ghostly feel as the overlapping film is lighter. The band members are wearing white clothes with light blood stains. The expression on the bands face shows that they are zombies. Towards the end of the video more blood stains appear on their clothes this ad’s mystery as to how this is happening. Leafs on the floor add to the scary effect. In the filming of the performance the camera does not move. Zooms are tilts are used, this shows that the music video is amateur.
A cut to a scene of a church is shown a tilt is used to reveal the characters. All of the footage taken is sped up, this makes the film look old fashioned. The characters are wearing a shirt and tie and the girl is wearing a white lace dress. The dress looks old fashioned and ghostly as her skin tone is similar to the dress colour. The church is part of the old creepy theme.
A cut to a forest of the two same characters is shown the characters are walking in front of the camera this is a very good shot as the audience can see the surrounding. The characters sit on a rug and have a picnic extreme close ups reveal the characters relationship with one another. The strawberry being fed to each other support the theory of the characters relationship.
Towards the end of the video the characters from the story join the band. This represents the ending of the video as the two come together to make the music video whole.
